The Blue Marble 2012 is an image released by NASA that shows the planet as viewed from the Suomi NPP satellite on January 23, 2012. The satellite made 6 orbits while collecting data with its Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).
The image is actually a composite of many different views stitched together to create a realistic and high-resolution satellite view of the planet.
Probably the first thing you'll notice of the image is the cloud coverage. The patterns of clouds are unique and vary a great deal from location to location.
The land in the image is also clear and vividly shows landforms such as mountains, deserts, and forests.
The water throughout the image has a striking blue appearance, with portions of shallow water even appearing an aqua or teal color.
